Chapter sixteen

Dax

The cacophony of cheers gets louder and louder as we watch Letty cross the finish line. Goosebumps break out over my skin as the stadium roars.

She did it. She fucking won!

I can’t help it. I choke up and blink away tears. I look around the pit box at her family and team, hugging and patting each other on the back with congratulations. Happiness and excitement line the smiles on their faces. We all know what a hard road it’s been for Letty and this moment marks a change more considerable than we will ever know.

Letty is the first woman to win an ARCA race.

Although we have many more to race, this will be the one we all look back on and remember as the first.

But not the last.

No, my girl will keep winning. She will keep proving to everyone that women deserve to be treated as equals to the men drivers in racing. She is the change this world needs and I love her even more for taking that weight on her shoulders and standing tall.

Several team members approach with open embraces and congratulatory praises. I may have been gone but I’m still a part of this team.

I stand next to Matthew just as he gives Letty the all-clear to light ‘em up. We both watch as she is given the checkered flag and proceeds to tear the rubber off of her tires. The flag blows in the window with each turn.

We stand in silence, yet it feels like solidarity. We may not be able to return to how we used to be, but we will always have one person who unites us.

Letty.

Side by side, we will help her succeed.

Matthew turns to me. His face is stern but his eyes shine brightly. They mirror the emotions swirling around inside of me. He is proud of his daughter, hopeful for the future, and slightly relieved she made it to the end without being hurt.

Brandon, on the other hand…I was shocked by how good it felt to watch another driver put him into the wall. He was inching closer and closer to Letty throughout the race, but she stayed ahead. As soon as he saw an opening to get closer, I could tell he was making a move for her.

Apparently, I wasn’t the only one.

I watch as Rufio Bianchi clips Brandon’s left fender, pushing him to the right and into the wall.

He’s made a name for himself in Formula 1 but decided to move into the NASCAR circuit by joining ARCA this season. For someone to move across the world to make, such a drastic change tells me there is more to the story.

The image of his hands on Letty plays in my mind and the urge to strangle a man with my bare hands has never felt so tempting. Feral. That is what she does to me.

Never again.

Never again will I let her slip through my fingers and into the arms of another man.

That’s why I need to fix this thing between Matthew and me.
